Leader welcomes Embassy staff

Over the last few weeks the Embassy has gradually moved around 1,000 members of staff into the striking new building in Nine Elms and this week it opened to the public for consular services for the first time.  U.S. Ambassador Woody Johnson said he is excited to welcome the public to the new Embassy and looks forward to being good neighbours  in Nine Elms.

Cllr Govindia said: “This week is a huge milestone in the Nine Elms journey. The new U.S. Embassy, which is one of the cornerstones of Nine Elms, opens its doors for business and I want to welcome every member of staff to the borough and say that it is a privilege to have them working here.

“The opening of the Embassy comes at an exciting time for Nine Elms, a time when we are moving away from the area being seen as a huge building site to the fruition of various projects such as the new Embassy – which is turning Nine Elms into a premium destination for London as a whole.”

Nine Elms is a £15billion transformation project that’s bringing 20,000 new homes and 25,000 permanent jobs to Wandsworth and the surrounding area.

Councillor Govindia added: “In the next few years we will see the completion of the Battersea Power Station project, the arrival of Apple and Penguin Random House and the opening of the Royal College of Art’s new Innovation Centre. Nine Elms is also going to be served by two new tube stations on the Northern Line giving it first class transport links to the rest of the city.

“The scale of Nine Elms is remarkable and no other regeneration project can match it in terms of social and economic benefits. I really hope that all the Embassy staff enjoy their time working in the borough and also take advantage of the wonderful facilities we have to offer. It is a pleasure to have you here.”
