Local projects awarded more than £179k of council funding

A range of arts and community projects, charities and local organisations have been recommended to receive a grant in the first round of funding under the new grant scheme, launched earlier this year.

The Wandsworth Grant Fund supports a wide range of not for profit activities in the following categories:

• Arts and Culture
• Environment and Attractive Neighbourhoods
• Children and Young People
• Citizenship and Civic Engagement
• Raising Aspirations and Potential
• Health and Well being

The new fund has streamlined the way the council allocates small grants.  Just one team now manages the administration of various different grants that were previously overseen by several council departments.

Evaluation and assessment is done by specialist council offers and councillors scrutinise the process to ensure value for money and that money is going where it will most benefit borough residents. Recommendations for funding were agreed by a meeting of the council’s Executive last night (June 29).

Subject to final grant agreement, projects receiving funding include:

The Growhampton Roadshow run by Roehampton Student’s Union which will deliver a food education outreach programme to schools, youth groups and community groups, with a big focus on food growing.  Read more.

Home Start Wandsworth which provides early intervention support to Wandsworth families with at least one child under 5 who are finding it hard to cope. A Your Health Your Future project will deliver specialist training to existing volunteers so they are better equipped to identify and support parents with mental illness, and a 2016 Expansion Drive project will help recruit and train a further 15 volunteers so the organisation can help even more families.

Other projects and groups getting significant amounts of funding include a play and fitness project on the Patmore Estate, support for ex-offenders and the homeless, a FAST employability scheme in Queenstown ward, the Feel Good community bakery in Roehampton, Tara Arts, and improvements to Providence House youth club, 

Then council’s finance spokesman, Cllr Guy Senior, said:

“The standard of entries for this first round of funding was very high, and we’re confident the successful projects will make a real difference to Wandsworth and its residents.

“We have chosen schemes that will support our borough’s most vulnerable people, help residents lead happier, more productive lives, and make Wandsworth’s thriving cultural scene even better.”

Round two of funding will open on September 2 the year. The deadline for submissions is November 2 and round two funding announced next February.
