Hundreds visit cancer pop-up shop

Published: 6 February 2015

Hundreds of visitors have been getting the facts about cancer at the Get to Know Cancer pop-up shop, open at Southside shopping centre until February 12.

During the first nine days of the shop, 876 people spoke to one of the shop’s volunteer expert nurses and thousands of information leaflets were handed out. Of these 78 people were referred on to their GP for further checks – for example because of suspicious moles or high blood pressure.

In addition 112 people have been referred on to free lifestyle courses. They are commissioned by the council to help people be healthier, and include services such as the Wandsworth Stop Smoking Service, adult weight management courses and health trainers.

There’s still time to visit the shop, which is just inside the entrance to Southside opposite TKMaxx and near Subway and The Entertainer.

The Get to Know Cancer pop-up is being run by the council’s public health team, with support from Southside and NHS England. It aims to help spread the message about cancer prevention, and encourage people to get themselves checked out – especially men, who are 37 per cent more likely to die of cancer than women.

Just pop into the shop – no appointment is necessary.
