FGM conference next week

Published: 29 January 2015

A conference next week will bring together professionals working with the borough’s women and girls to discuss female genital mutilation (FGM).

The council's community safety department has organised the event, to coincide with the United Nations Zero Tolerance to FGM Day. As well as FGM, the conference will discuss culture-based violence and abuse such as forced marriage.

The February 6 conference at the Kairos Centre in Roehampton will be opened by the leader of the council Ravi Govindia.

Speakers will include

  • Onjali Rauf, founding director of http://www.makingherstory.org.uk/
  • Sarbjit Athwal, author of ‘Shamed’ who has personal experience of honour-based violence and is founder of the charity True Honour
  • Marie Jenkinson from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Forced Marriage Unit
  • Local psychotherapist Sahar Beg who works with victims of culture-based abuse and violence

The Council’s health spokesman Cllr Jim Maddan said:

“Next week’s conference will bring together frontline professionals across the borough to equip them with the knowledge and skills as part of our ongoing commitment to help

vulnerable women and girls. We will also continue to work closely with groups within the community to tackle this problem.”

Violence and Abuse in the Name of Honour will be held from 10am to 1pm. If you are interested in attending or would like to find out more, contact the council’s community safety division on (020) 8871 6562 or e-mail SMalik@wandsworth.gov.uk
