Sign up for flood alerts
Published: 10 February 2014
People worried about flooding are urged to sign up for flood alerts and get themselves and vulnerable neighbours prepared.
There have been no flood alerts issued for anywhere in the borough today (Monday February 10) but further rain is expected this week.
The council’s Emergency Planning department advise people living near the Thames, especially along the Putney Embankment, to ensure they are signed up for Environment Agency flood alerts. Signs were erected along the embankment to warn of frequent flooding there, and most residents are expected to already be prepared.
Residents and businesses are responsible for protecting their property. Products are available to buy that contain crystals that swell on contact with water to form a barrier. These are lightweight and easy to store and dispose of. Find out more about these and similar products at http://www.bluepages.org.uk/.
There is nothing to suggest that the Wandle or Graveney rivers or Beverley Brook will overflow - they are currently running at low- to mid-level. However, people living near them are also encouraged to sign up for alerts in case the situation changes.
Flood waters can pose a health risk, and Public Health England has issued joint advice with the Environment Agency on how to prepare for floods and clean up afterwards.
Leader of the council Ravi Govindia said:
“Over the past few days we have all seen shocking scenes of people’s homes being destroyed by flooding, and today the threat has come closer to home, with flooding along the Thames in Surrey.
“But I would stress that we have not been told about any imminent threat of flooding in our borough, and we are monitoring the situation closely. However, it is only common sense to sign up for flood alerts and make sure you and your neighbours are prepared for anything nature could throw at us.
