Estate improvement plans on display

Published: 30 January 2014

The ‘preferred option’ for improving the Winstanley and York Road estates will be on display at York Gardens Library in early February.

Four different development plans for the neighbourhood were put out to public consultation in October last year and the upcoming exhibitions will present the proposal which received the greatest level of local support.

The exhibitions will be at York Gardens Library on:

  • Saturday 8 February, 12pm - 3pm
  • Monday 10 February, 5pm – 8pm
  • Wednesday 12 February, 10am - 1pm

The full results of the options consultation will also be on display including how local feedback has been used to help develop the preferred option.

Members of the masterplanning team will be there to explain the proposals in more detail and to answer questions.

A newsletter summarising the preferred option will be delivered to every home on the estates following the exhibitions.

Council leader Ravi Govindia said: “This is an important step towards creating an improvement plan for the Winstanley and York Road estates and I encourage local people to come and view the exhibition and to talk to the masterplanning team.

“We still have a long way to go before this preferred option is developed into a detailed design and there will be further opportunities for estate residents to engage in the process and to shape their neighbourhood for the better.

“The next major public consultation will take place in the summer of this year when more detailed design and delivery arrangements will be presented to the local community.”

Wandsworth Council has made a commitment to investing millions of pounds in these estates and appointed GVA and Levitt Bernstein to develop a masterplan with the local community and stakeholders.

The overall aims are to improve the quality of life, create local jobs, improve housing standards and to create a safer and more attractive place to live.

The council has also set out a series of housing commitments to explain how estate residents would be compensated if they need to move home as part of the project and what they can expect from their new property.

The preferred option and the results of the options consultation will be reported to the council’s housing overview and scrutiny committee on February 25, 2014. Councillors will be asked to endorse the proposals and to instruct the masterplanning team to develop the designs in more detail during 2014.
