Tooting pub named Asset of Community Value
Published: 19 August 2013
A much-loved pub in Tooting has been officially recognised as an Asset of Community Value (ACV) following an emphatic campaign by local people.
Wandsworth Council last week decided to grant the Wheatsheaf, in Upper Tooting Road, ACV status, which gives members of the community time to bid to buy the site should it ever come up for sale.
Campaigners asked the council to consider their ACV application in response to mounting fears that a supermarket chain might want to buy it and convert it into a store.
Also added to the council's list of assets of community value last Thursday (August 15) was The Lodge in Tooting Bec Road.
Wandsworth Council formally put it on the list after receiving an application from local group Custodians of Tooting Bec Lodge.
The Localism Act 2011 gives communities with a local connection a right to identify properties which, if they came up for sale, they would want to try and purchase.
The legislation does not give a right to buy the property in question - but it does give potential bidders the time to put a proposal together.
