Wandsworth Bridge works

Works are being undertaken to deliver essential structural maintenance to Wandsworth Bridge.

This includes making the northbound bus lane and segregated cycle lane permanent, following a trial in 2024.

What is being done

The works will include:

  • Essential bridge deck repair and waterproofing beneath the footway
  • Construction of a new stepped cycle track on each side of the bridge
  • Widening and resurfacing of footways on both sides of the bridge
  • Junction and bus stop improvements at Jews Row
  • New contraflow cycling on Jews Row
  • Full resurfacing of the carriageway at the end of the programme

Dates

Works started on Tuesday 26 May 2026 and are expected to complete end of October 2026 (weather permitting).

How traffic will be affected

Two-way motor vehicle traffic will be maintained throughout the works.

The northbound bus lane and carriageway cycle lane will be suspended for the duration of the works. This allows the works to be carried out safely.

Traffic management will be phased as the works progress.

Overnight closure

Towards the end of the programme, the bridge will be closed to all traffic overnight (9pm to 5am) for approximately one week. This is to allow for resurfacing. A date is to be confirmed.

The bridge will reopen each day following the overnight works and diversion routes will be clearly signed during the closures.

Hammersmith and Fulham side

The traffic signals at the junction north of the bridge will be switched off and replaced with intelligent temporary traffic lights with pedestrian facilities. These temporary lights will be linked to TfL’s control systems so timings can be adjusted to manage traffic demand.

Pedestrians and cyclists

Pedestrian access will be maintained, although routes may vary depending on the phase of works.

During some phases, existing cycle lanes will be suspended. Cyclists can either dismount or use the carriageway.
