Work begins on cycling contraflow scheme in Roehampton

Works are about to get underway that will enable cyclists to take a short cut along Roehampton High Street.

A cycling contraflow scheme is being introduced in the high street which will allow cyclists to travel in both directions along this quiet one-way street. 

The contraflow will apply in Roehampton High Street from its junction with Dover House Road to Roehampton Lane.

The decision to proceed with the scheme follows positive feedback from a public consultation and successful pilot schemes in other parts of the borough.

The route will form part of Transport for London’s Quietway 21 (Q21) which links Wandsworth Common to Teddington.

Additional signage and carriageway markings will be introduced along with a mandatory cycle lane on the approach to Roehampton Lane.

Transport spokesman Cllr Jonathan Cook said: “This scheme is part of a wider package of measures designed to encourage people to take to two wheeled travel. There are clear and obvious health and air quality benefits if we can get more residents to take up this non-polluting form of transport.

“Introducing convenient short-cuts for cyclists on quieter roads with low traffic volumes is just one of the ways we are encouraging higher levels of bike travel in the borough.”

This is well intentioned. However there are two points which the Council may wish to consider,. 1. With parking on the LHS there is little or no room for cyclists going down the street if a 4x 4 is coming the other way. This is probably the source of some friction with motorists. 2. At the intersection with Roehampton Lane it is apparent that vehicles leaving Danebury Ave and turning right do not expect cyclists coming the other way. I have had to brake on two occasions already to avoid being hit by right turning traffic. Probably what is required here is a delay of say 20 seconds to allow cyclists time to get across before the lights at Danebury Ave go green. As it is there is potential for a serious accident here.

DANGEROUS !! The road is not designed for cycle lanes. What the council is starting here is to make the road cycle only in their madness. Lets go back to the beginning and have Horse and Carts.....

Whoever agreed to go ahead with this plan has lost his mind. Very narrow road and dangerous for cyclist. Had a wing mirror smashed by some idiot on the bicycle only because he decided to squeeze through between me and the cars parked alongside the road. He used his fist to do that. Now I am looking at the expensive cost of a repair. Morons from the council strike again- like there was no alternative road to use- like Medfield Street which is much wider.

How the hell is this going to happen without somebody being seriously injured, this is not a quiet street, cars and vans parked in this street makes it almost impossible to get through on many occasions.

I wonder if the council will improve policing and enforcement of cycling laws? Pavement cycling and running red lights is becoming more and more common, which is why I no longer support measures to increase cycling. It is dangerous for pedestrians when there are bicycles speeding downhill along pavements and speeding through red lights. Cycling should be regulated in the same way as motor vehicles, with number plates, insurance and tax.

Roehampton High Street is not a quiet street. What is wrong with Medfield Street which is 2 way traffic and far safer for cyclists. The likely outcome will be cyclists will find Roe High Street too congested and will use the pavement. Can we see the public consultation details please.

I hope the cyclists are going to pay for this cycle contra flow scheme in Roehampton. We have lots of cycleways in Battersea - along past the Wandsworth Bridge roundabout - where the cyclist sue the pavements and motor vehicle roads rather than their expensive cycleways.
