Carers Week from June 11-15 is a national campaign that shines a spotlight on the contribution made by the UK’s 6.5m people who give unpaid care to a disabled, ill or older family member or friend.

The Wandsworth Carers’ Centre provides support to the borough’s carers. Their Carers Week events include:

  • A trip to Kew Gardens for carers and the person they care for on June 15
  • The Big Carers Event at the town hall on June 14, including the chance to socialise, tips on relaxation techniques, entertainment and a free lunch
  • The annual Carers’ Bake-Off at Muffin Break, Southside on June 11
  • A pub lunch at the Rocket in Putney on June 12.

To book your place on any of these, or for more information, call (020) 8877 1200 or email info@wandsworthcarers.org.uk. Find out more about how the Carers’ Centre could help you, including a free respite service, by visiting http://www.carerswandsworth.org.uk/.

Parents and carers of children or young people with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND) can get help from the council’s Family Information Service. They run a Disabled Children’s Register and the popular WAND Card scheme that enables families with SEND members get extra support and discounts when they’re out and about.

Tomorrow (June 9) members of the team, plus representatives from Contact, Healthwatch Wandsworth, the Citizens Advice Bureau and others will be running a stand between 11am and 2.30pm at Southside (near New Look).

They will be able to answer questions for anyone who cares, unpaid for a child or young person or other relative or friend with a disability or special need. At 1.30pm there will be a special prize draw of vouchers and treats donated by local businesses.

To find out more, call (020) 8871 7899, email fis@wandsworth.gov.uk or text 07797 805 456.

Carers providing care and support to an adult in Wandsworth can ask the council for a Carer Assessment to see if you qualify for support. Find out more at www.wandsworth.gov.uk/carers.

The Wandsworth Young Carers Project helps people under the age of 18. Call (020) 7228 2566 or email wandsworthyoungcarers@family-action.org.uk.

The council’s health and social care spokesman Cllr Paul Ellis said: “Many people are carers without realising it. If you think you may be a carer get in touch with the council, the Carers’ Centre or your GP and find out if you are entitled to any support.”
