Please don’t dump unwanted Christmas Trees on the street

Published: Friday 12th January 18

The council is halfway through its annual Christmas Tree collection service and is on course to collect tens of thousands more trees in the next week.

The free pick up service began on January 4th and continues until January 17th.

Over the course of the fortnight of collections the council’s refuse and recycling service can expect to pick up somewhere in the region of 80,000-100,0000 unwanted trees.

All the trees that are collected will be shredded and turned into compost.

Residents with front gardens should place trees for collection alongside their dustbins and recycling sacks inside their gardens. Those without front gardens can place them on the pavement directly in front of their home but only if it does not cause an obstruction.

Trees should not be left out for collection any earlier than 6.30pm on the day before the collection is due.
People who live in blocks of flats should leave their trees near to their refuse bin store, making sure they do not block access.

Residents are being strongly urged not to abuse this free collection service by dumping trees on the street or in the road. This is totally unnecessary as they will be collected free of charge from people's front gardens or communal bin areas.

There’s a combined total of 450 miles of pavement space in Wandsworth. People who dump their trees on pavements only make the mammoth task of finding and collecting them all the more difficult.

I have the same experience, just arrived home from a business trip and my tree is still here. Please advise?

As others, tree left out on 3rd Jan and has missed 3 regular collections for Coates Avenue. Next steps?

We put our christmas tree out next to our bins in the front garden as instructed on 6th January, since when there have been 2 Monday refuse collections, but our tree has been left each time. However trees left out on the pavement and causing an obstruction to pedestrians WERE collected. Who should we believe? When will our tree be collected?

We left our Christmas tree in our front garden on Friday 5th January. We have had two collections of refuse since then on 6th January and 12th January and our tree has still not been collected!!

Same here in Pulborough Road, Southfields. Our tree was by the bins in the front garden on the collection days, but was left behind.... When do you collect it? Tomorrow is supposed to be the last day!!

Our tree has not been collected -- either yesterday (collection day) 15 Jan, or the previous collection day (8/1). Please advise when trees will finally be collected from Foulser Road SW17.

Same problem as many others. I did the right thing and left the tree in front garden by the bins. Not collected. All other trees littering the pavement and road WERE collected. Scheme ends tomorrow. What do I do? Shambles!

Same as everyone else - put it with the bins (as per council instructions) but it wasn't collected, whilst all those dumped on the street were. Called to advise you, was told by your operator to put it on the street and it would be collected last Tuesday - still nothing. I've just tried calling again and was caller 22 in the queue - so tried to report it online and got an error.

It’s hard to leave your tree out if we don’t know when are are going to be collected. They seem to have blown around quite a bit and now a hazard. Hope they are collected from Latchmere Rd soon.

As instructed, we left our tree in our front garden, next to our bin. It now seems that all trees left on our street have been collected, EXCEPT for ours! Will it be collected now on 17th? Should I put on the pavement that day? Confused !

Like everyone else below, we have followed the rules set up by you and yet our tree has not been collected for the last couple of bin collections. It seems like the christmas tree collection is a myth...

We left our tree in our front garden as requested so it wouldn't block the pavement and it was the only one in the street (Sudbrooke Rd) not collected. Should we now move it onto the pavement so you can come and collect it?

Here we are on 15th of January and the trees still haven't been collected around Northcote road. Your original instructions were to leave them out for collection on the next scheduled collection day after xmas, ie the 5th, it now looks like we are going to have this chaos until at least the 19th!

Yet again the tree collection is a shambles and the principal culprit for trees ending up in the street is the refuse collection operatives themselves. Plenty of us kept them in the front gardens but if Wandsworth's own contractors put them in the streets then fail to collect them, there's not a great deal we can do. But yes, there is something we can all do! Use your vote for the Council election on 3 May this year.

At last the b..... trees in Earlsfield have gone! Hurrah! Here’s hoping for a BETTER service from SERCO next year or another contractor. Sunday morning 14 January.

If Christmas trees are being collected for the past 10 days how come bot a single one has been collected in Tooting or it seems Earlsfield? Our waste collection was on 8th January but you have not collected a single tree in this area and most were out on the street ready for pick up by then. This is far less efficient than in previous years. Why? You should not keep changing the refuse collection contract as the service always deteriorates.

Like the others below, my Christmas tree is still sitting outside my house as instructed before collection day, by my bins (we have no front garden per se).It was out ready for collection two weeks ago. I note a pile of trees out on Swaffield Road HAS finally been taken. Why they didn't also take ours from Shire Place I have no idea.

Is this a joke? For last 2 years we have followed instruction but tree not collected and we chase up twice. Those who fly tip get rid of their trees. What message is being given here? Is it any surprise fly tipping is increasing. Contractors need to be incentivised to collect trees left correctly better to encourage correct behaviour.

I also left tree with bins in front garden. My tree was moved to the pavement when bins collected and has been there every since, not collected by council. We are following council instructions, it is the councils subcontractors who aren’t doing what they are supposed to be doing.

Utter garbage. Tree outside my home (in front garden) has not been collected on the last TWO collection days as per Wandsworth instruction. Maybe if everyone dumped in Street they might actually come and collect...

The information states the trees will be collected on usual collection days within the two week window. Clearly we like most other people put ours out ready to meet the first date. That was 7 days ago and it’s still there waiting. It’s brilliant that you offer this but it needs to be managed far better to Prevent the pavements turning into a Christmas tree gauntlet.

It seems that trees have been collected today in my street and neighbouring areas, but my tree I left - as requested - on my front garden, next to my refuse bins has not been collected. I have noticed that a few houses like mine still had their trees in their front garden. Will you be coming back for a second collection? It would appear only the trees left on the streets have been collected.

Rubbish was collected today and the bin men put trees in the street but now they haven’t been collected (Broomwood Road). We were expecting they would be taken last week on collection day, but for some reason they weren’t, so at this point the area has been littered with trees for a week. Every year it’s a fiasco. The service is a very nice idea in theory, but why can’t you give clear dates and times and then stick to them? #xmastreehell

Earlsfield is littered with trees in front yards and on pavements. It has been VERY inefficient this year. The street cleaners were moving trees to sweep under and around them in my street today! Whoever planned this process was unwise to threaten residents with fines etc. Half the people in my street would be "criminals".

Ditto, left tree in front garden next to bins, rubbish collected but not tree. The trees that were dumped on the pavement have been collected, doesn't encourage compliance with the councils wishes.

I would jut like to say that my tree was removed by the waste or recycling collection company and placed on the road. I assumed for collection later that day. However, it is still there. Not sure if to take it back into the garden or not - worried it won't be collected if i do.

Our experience is the same as others - no sign of any collection around Tooting Bec, our rubbish went on Monday but not the trees. Or should I be congratulating the Council on its new initiative - the January display of Christmas trees around the streets of the Borough!

Agree with Cathy. Great idea but also left it in drive way next to recycling and rubbish. They were collected but tree wasn’t. It’s only 8ft tall!

12 jan and there are 15 Xmas trees dumped in the street in Victoria Mews and 8 on Magdalen Road and I counted 17 in roads off Magdalen - clearing them up - don't make me laugh - try DOING it

Great plan, but I left my Christmas tree in my front garden with my recycling and rubbish, the night before collection day. The rubbish and recycling were collected. The tree was not.
