Wanted – Shopmobility volunteers

Published: Thursday 2nd November 17

Shopmobility, which helps older and disabled people do their shopping and have a chat with friends, is looking for more volunteers.

Wandsworth Community Transport, which provides the service with funding from Wandsworth Council, says demand is far outstripping supply, with many people unable to receive help due to the volunteer shortage.

Elderly and disabled people get a door-to-door shuttle service to the Shopmobility office at Sainsbury’s in Wandsworth, plus the use of wheelchairs and scooters.  It needs people to drive the shuttle, push wheelchairs, or just provide a guiding arm.

Volunteers will need to give up an hour and a half of their time once a week and full expenses are paid.

Joyce, 91, has been using the service for more than ten years. She's pictured right with her volunteer, Italian language student Grazia, who uses the experience to help practice her English.

Joyce said: “I used to be able to get around the shops on my own, but recently I’ve found it increasingly difficult and I need someone to push me in a wheelchair. I’d be lost without this service because as well as doing my shopping, I can see my friends and enjoy a weekly outing.”
