Work set to begin on Battersea Church Road safety initiatives

Published: Wednesday 26th July 17

Work is about to begin on a series of road safety measures designed to improve pedestrian safety and encourage motorists to drive carefully on one of Battersea’s busiest roads.

The works involve a series of simple design changes at four key junctions in Battersea Church Road which will make it safer, quicker and easier for pedestrians to cross.

Safer crossing points will be installed at the following junctions:

  • Sunbury Lane
  • Crewkerne Court
  • Bolingbroke Walk
  • Condray Place

The changes will involve the construction of kerbside extensions meaning shorter distances for pedestrians to travel when crossing the carriageway.

Two new digital signs are also being installed that are activated when approaching vehicles are travelling at excess speed. Research shows that drivers do slow down when their vehicles light up these signs.

These illuminated digital signs will be placed on both approaches to the bend in Battersea Church Road near St Mary’s Church and Vicarage Walk.

In a recent public consultation exercise, 76 per cent of local people who responded supported the proposals.

Battersea Church Road and Westbridge Road should be one way. When a truck and a bus or a car cross each other on the curb near the church, they have to use the pavement! Children are around, it's very dangerous.

Why not make Battersea Church Road one way with Westbridge Road one way in the opposite direction?

A Pedestrian Crossing at Battersea Bridge Road/ Battersea Church Road is what is desperately wanted and needed. The amount of people in need of a safe crossing and where demand is greatest must be taken into account. ANY PLANS?.

2nd attempt. A set of traffic lights at the Battersea Bridge Road (BBR) end of Battersea Church Road (BCR) would be a good idea - I never actually see many pedestrians crossing else where. A pedestrian crossing between the 2 bus stops in Vicarage Crescent (VC) would go down well. Plus some form of traffic control in VC - motorbikes frequently travelling at 50 mph - had this conversation with Battersea Square newsagent. Would be a good idea to have the signage for the low railway bridge in (VC) at the BBR end of BCR. At least 3 HGVs a day find they can't get under the bridge - so they go down VC to the Battersea High Street end to find they can't turn without damaging cars and street furniture and so attempt to reverse back up VC.

Great initiative! Could we also have a pelican crossing just a few metres down the road at lombard Wharf? Now that the construction is finished quite a lot of people are trying to cross between Lombard Wharf and Gwynne road and the crossing point to the east of the bridge is now obsolete. Thanks!
