Be a quitter this No Smoking Day

Published: Friday 24th February 17

March 8 is No Smoking Day, and Wandsworth smokers are being urged to make it the day they take the first step in giving up tobacco.

Free local support to quit is available through the council’s Stop Smoking Service. Research shows you are up to four times more likely to quit successfully if you use a local stop smoking service to advise you on the right products to use and offer you regular support and information.

The number of people in Wandsworth who smoke has dropped from a fifth of residents in 2011 to around 13 per cent now, but smoking is still the single biggest cause of preventable death. Two-thirds of smokers want to quit.

The council’s health spokesman Cllr Jim Maddan said: “Stopping smoking is the single most effective way to dramatically and quickly improve your health. We understand that many find the task too daunting, but they do not need to do it alone.

“No Smoking Day is the perfect opportunity to inspire smokers in Wandsworth to quit for good and we would urge the borough’s smokers to reach out to our Stop Smoking Team. You can get face-to-face help at advice sessions and drop-in clinics, or get support over the phone.”

The Stop Smoking Service can help people who smoke cigarettes and other tobacco products such as shisha and e-cigarettes.

Wandsworth Stop Smoking Service offers free help, advice and access to Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and other stop smoking medications to all smokers who live or work in the Wandsworth area.

To access personalised support from the Stop Smoking Service to help you give up any tobacco product, including cigarettes and e-cigarettes, visit, call the 24 hour helpline on 0800 389 7921 or email

Specialist advice is available in pharmacies and GP surgeries borough-wide, and there are drop-in clinics that anyone can visit without an appointment in the following locations:

  • Queen Mary’s Hospital Cardiology unit, Roehampton Lane, Roehampton - Tuesdays 10am-3pm
  • St George’s Hospital (Atkinson Morley Wing) Blackshaw Road, Tooting - Wednesdays and Fridays 10am-3pm.

No Smoking Day is an annual campaign run nationwide by the British Heart Foundation.  To find out more visit and join the conversation on Twitter using the hashtag #NoSmokingDay.
