Key town centre regeneration scheme gathering pace

Council leader Ravi Govindia visited the latest major regeneration site in Wandsworth town centre to see for himself how work is progressing.
The redevelopment of this key site fronting Garratt Lane and Wandsworth High Street is gathering pace and construction will start soon on providing 200 new homes, a brand new and improved public library, better teaching facilities at South Thames College, new shops and a revamped town centre green space.

Fifty of the new homes will be affordable and will be offered to Wandsworth residents on lower incomes to rent or buy at a discounted price.
These low cost homes and the other upgraded community facilities are being provided by leading residential developer L&Q under the terms of the legal agreement that concluded its purchase of the land earlier this year.
This includes two former council-owned buildings fronting Garrett Lane and Wandsworth High Street plus another formerly owned by South Thames College. L&Q‘s development will see these three ageing office blocks replaced with four new high quality buildings, designed by award-winning architects.
Another key element of the scheme is making better public use of the Old Burial Ground in Garratt Lane, which is an important but underused town centre green space. New pedestrian links will be opened up providing a direct route into the High Street. It will also have additional seating and new public art installed.

A state-of-the-art library will also form part of this route, opening up onto a newly created public square, directly adjacent to the burial ground, offering seating and play space for younger children.
Cllr Govindia said: “I was very impressed with progress at this important regeneration site. Once completed it deliver new homes, new shops and new jobs, but also a state-of-the-art public library too.
“And it will transform the Old Burial Ground into a much more valuable and welcoming green amenity. The new library will open out onto this small park and there will be new pedestrian links through to Wandsworth High Street.
“It is a very well designed scheme that will create an attractive new leisure, shopping, residential and educational quarter in this hitherto closed off part of the town centre.”
