New housing scheme helping Tooting residents maintain their independence
Published: Friday 30th October 15
A new extra care housing development has been officially opened in Tooting offering 45 apartments specially designed to help vulnerable older people retain their independence.
The new Ensham House scheme on Franciscan Road is the result of a partnership agreement between Wandsworth Council and Viridian Housing. Every new home is being offered to existing borough residents with most of the flats now occupied.

Each property is fully self-contained, with its own front door, round the clock on-site care support and first rate communal facilities including a lounge and garden.
Each resident has a bespoke care package to address their individual needs and to help them maintain an independent lifestyle.
The extra care housing scheme is managed by Viridian with care services provide by London Care. It has been supported by the council through a £1m grant. The development offers local people over the age of 55 with an alternative to a residential care home.
At Ensham House the communal facilities include a hair and beauty salon, lounge, social craft room, kitchen and dining room, scooter storage, assisted bathrooms in all flats and a laundry room.
Wandsworth Council’s cabinet member for housing Paul Ellis and Viridian Housing chief executive Nick Apetroaie visited the housing development to meet the new residents.
Cllr Ellis said: “I’m delighted to see so many residents now settling in to their new homes here at Ensham House. This fantastic development is helping dozens of local people maintain their independence and provides the reassurance of round the clock on-site care services. .
“It’s a wonderful housing choice for older residents who need extra day-to-day support but want to live in a home with its own front door.
“I’m delighted that our partnership with Viridian is now providing housing-for-life for more local people and we will continue to explore new ways of working with housing developers to deliver the additional homes our borough needs.”

Nick Apetroaie said: “The scheme has been made possible thanks to continuous support from the council and we are grateful to all our partners for being involved. We are delighted with the opportunity to continue to provide our residents with safe and secure homes they can enjoy and we are pleased to announce that Viridian plans to open other successful schemes in the borough in the coming year.”
The council’s partnership with Viridian is one part of a far reaching housing strategy designed to deliver 18,000 new homes over the next 10 years. The progressive plan – called the Wandsworth Housing Offer – is providing Wandsworth residents with a range of new and improved housing options in every corner of the borough.
