DescriptionThere are courses available that teach the basics of Makaton, which is a type of sign and symbol language used to help people of any age with learning disabilities and communication difficulties. The courses are offered by the adult learning disability team from St George’s NHS Trust and are for family members, carers and workers who need to use Makaton at home and in their work.

The aims of the beginner’s course are for participants to:

- learn the signs and symbols from stages 1-4 of the core Makaton vocabulary
- be confident about using them daily with adults and children

A two day follow up course is also available for those who have completed a beginner’s course. This concentrates on improving and developing signing skills and symbol use and covers stages 5 to 8 of the core Makaton vocabulary.
