DescriptionThe Silver Line Helpline is a new charity that opened nationally on 25 November 2013 to support older people. It signposts older people to services, helps break through the stigma of loneliness and isolation and helps to tackle the problems of abuse and neglect. The charity supports older people in three main ways:

- By sign-posting to the many varied services that exist around the country
- By offering a befriending service to combat loneliness
- By empowering those who may be suffering abuse and neglect, if appropriate, and referring them to specialist services to protect them from harm

The signposting service is provided by staff working with a database of useful local support services and befriending is provided by trained volunteers. The charity's work to prevent abuse and neglect calls upon the specialist support of organisations such as Action on Elder Abuse and social services departments, where appropriate.

The Silver Line Helpline is a confidential freephone number that is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

The new charity was started with an initial grant from the Department of Health. A helpline pilot began in November 2012 with funding from Comic Relief and the national helpline opened on 25 November 2013 with the help of The Big Lottery Fund.
