Free Christmas tree recycling

Published: Friday 28th December 18

The council will be offering a free Christmas tree recycling service from January 4 as part of its regular collection service.

The trees will all be shredded and turned into compost.

The council will be aiming to collect all unwanted trees from people’s front gardens on their scheduled refuse and recycling collection days between Friday, January 4 and Friday, January 18.

Residents with front gardens should place any trees for collection alongside their dustbins and recycling sacks.

Those without front gardens can place them on the pavement directly in front of their home but only if it does not cause an obstruction. These trees should not be left out for collection any earlier than 6.30pm on the day before the collection is due.

Residents who live in blocks of flats should leave their trees near to their refuse bin store, making sure they do not block access.

People should make sure that all decorations, pots and stands have been removed and are being reminded this service applies only to real trees not artificial ones.

Over the course of the fortnight the council’s refuse and recycling service can expect to pick up somewhere in the region of 90,000-100,000 unwanted trees.

Residents are being strongly urged not to abuse this free service by dumping trees on the street or in the road. This is totally unnecessary as they will be collected free of charge from people's front gardens or communal bin areas.

If trees are dumped on the highway blocking pavements or parking spaces, the pick-up crews have to be diverted away from their scheduled collections to deal with this problem. People who dump trees in this way cause only delays and inconvenience for their neighbours.

Environment spokesman Cllr Steffi Sutters said: “All you have to do is leave your tree in your front garden alongside your dustbins and we will aim to collect them on the same day we collect your refuse and recycling.

“It won’t be the same lorry that does the pick-up so please don’t worry if your bins are emptied and your recycling sacks taken away before your tree is collected.

“If you don’t have a front garden just leave them as close as you can to your front door and if you live on an estate place them next to your communal bin store.

“Please be patient and don’t dump them in the street on in the road.  All this does is block pavements and parking spaces and makes it harder for parents with prams and buggies and people in wheelchairs to move around safely.

“It also means our pick-up crews have to be diverted away from their normal tasks to clear pavements and street corners and this ends up costing local taxpayers more money.

“Our message is simple. Please take full advantage of our free recycling services and let us collect your Christmas tree when we pick up your binbags and recycling sacks.”

Refuse collection services will operate normally on New Year’s Eve but on all other days between December 25 and up to and including Friday, January 4, collections will be made the following day. The normal timetable will be fully restored on Monday, January 7.

Our tree has been outside (by the bins as instructed) since the 6th Jan... still has not been picked up. Please can you advise when this will happen?

Our tree as well has not been collected from Honeywell Road. Was near the bins on our front garden, as per instructions but seems like it was moved to the sidewalk when the garbage was collected on Friday 18th January. Please advise when a pick up will occur

My Christmas tree has been in the front garden per instructions, awaiting collection since the 4th January and it's still there now! All other trees on the street appear to have been taken apart from mine at number 85 Charlmont Road. Can it please get collected asap.

Yet again my tree has not been collected. It has been left, as per instructions, in my front garden beside my bin. Every year Wandsworth promises free collection of trees and every year my tree is not collected unless I complain. PLease can my tree be collected I am at 34 Barchard Street. I notice that the tree from 36 Barchard Street has gone why not mine? Thank you in hope

Our tree has been waiting patiently for collection in our front garden since 3 Jan. Two bin collections have come and gone since then, and we have no more collections due before the advertised Christmas tree collections end tomorrow? Frustrating when trees left on the road are taken and our well-behaved front garden tree isn't...

All other trees from our street have been taken, except ours which was left in the front yard with the bins as instructed. It looks like the only ones collected were the ones dumped in the street... Strathblaine Road.

My tree has been waiting in my front garden but has not yet been taken, despite my neighbours’ trees going. I would be grateful if it could collected this week from Old Park Avenue. Thank you.

Our tree in Gatton Road still hasn't been collection despite being out for 2 bin collections. There are no other trees on our road (i think because no one else had one) but please can ours be collected?

Christmas tree has been sitting in our front garden since 5th January and has not yet been taken away. Trees which have been left in the street or corner of road haven been uplifted twice, I.e. On 7th and 14th January but the ones in the gardens, I.e, 61 and 63 and some others in Moyser Road are still there. This happens every year, except for last year and I would be obliged if they could be taken away as soon as possible.

13th Jan and trees on Vardens Road STILL haven’t been collected.... the bin men put all trees on the street, and now they are flying around, obstructing cars & pedestrians. When are you going to take these out??

On Thursday the binmen moved trees from gardens to the pavement ready for collection. However, a day later they have not been removed. There is now a line of trees on the pavement. Please can you say when they will be taken away.

I’m fed up of this nonsense of Christmas trees littering the streets every year. Why can’t people just get an artificial tree which they can reuse. Why this stupid need for a “real” tree??? Waste of money and not environmentally friendly!!!

Nice idea but our refuse collectors don't seem to have been told. I have just got home from work to discover that my tree has been thrown from my garden into the gutter by the binmen and left lying there as have many others around my street.

Yet again, Wandsworth fail to collect Christmas trees. My collection (normally 3rd January on a Thursday) was Friday last week - the 4th, and no tree collection occurred. Everyone on the street left their trees out as required and now it's littering the street and front gardens. When will Wandsworth rectify this?

You are embarrassing yourself again, Wandsworth. For the nth year, my tree was not collected on the day of my rubbish collection. You have all these strong words against littering pavements with trees, but you don’t keep your side of the bargain. This is a debacle literally every year. It’s a great service in theory; why can’t it be done in line with the instructions, with competence?

This already has signs of being a repeat of last year's failure. Our refuse collection was 4 January (delayed from 3 January) but residents' trees were NOT collected. People left them in their front yards as required.

Our tree is still outside the front of our property and it is collection day. This is not the first time our property was skipped for rubbish and recycling collection despite putting it outside our front gate! Highly disappointed. Please fix this as it seems to be more of a reoccurrence rather than an accident.

Last year I was the only household on the street who kept my unwanted tree on my property by the bins. Everyone else left theirs on the pavement or in the road. How come my tree was the only one NOT collected!? I had to report it and it took several days for another collection to take it away. What is being done to make sure the collection service follows the proper protocol this year?
