Advice on how to own your own home

Published: Friday 5th October 18

Get information and advice on the housing choices available to local people at the Affordable Housing Open Day next week.

Open the Door 2018 is a completely free event to help first time buyers living or working in Wandsworth find their way around the different home ownership schemes available such as shared ownership, right to buy, right to part buy and the house purchase grant.

You will be able to meet with the council’s home ownership team which manages a list of eligible Wandsworth buyers. Many of the new affordable homes being built in Wandsworth can be purchased on shared ownership terms by local buyers who live or work in the borough but who must be registered on the list.

Open the Door also offers advice to council tenants wishing to explore their housing options, including information on House Purchase Grants, Right to Buy and Right to Part Buy. Wandsworth's Housing Lettings team will also be available to answer enquiries from council tenants who wish to transfer into another more suitable property.

Local housing providers and Independent financial and legal advisors will be on hand to give personal advice on mortgages and the buying process.

The council’s housing spokesman Cllr Kim Caddy said: “The council has made housing a priority, with our Building Homes for Local People programme aiming to deliver a thousand new homes – more than 60 per cent of which will be available at discounted rates to rent and buy.

“But we know that, with so many different housing schemes around, it can be difficult to know where to start, so come along to the Open the Door event for free, impartial advice on owning your own home.”

When: October 11,  2pm-8pm

Where: Wandsworth Civic Suite, Wandsworth High Street, SW18 2PU

Cost: Free

Building Homes for Local People? I don't think so! What the council is doing is DEMOLISHING the affordable homes currently occupied by local people on Danebury Avenue in Roehmapton and planning to replace them with a mix of luxury and not-really-affordable homes in years to come. The result will be a loss of council housing/truly affordable housing at a time when we really cannot afford to lose it! I think the council ought to focus on housing all of the local people who don't have a home, before trying to demolish what little council housing is currently available to them.
