Residents warned of travel disruption on the roads, tube and trains this weekend

Published: Thursday 2nd August 18

Residents are being advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys this weekend when planned road, rail and tube repairs will commence.

The series of projects are expected to have serious impact on the travelling public in this part of south west London.

This weekend there will be no District Line tube services travelling through Wandsworth on the Wimbledon branch line. Passengers will instead need to use bus replacement services.

The closures on the Wimbledon branch are part of a wider set of engineering works affecting both the District and Circle lines.

On both Saturday and Sunday there will be no Circle or District Line trains between South Kensington/ Edgware Road and Wimbledon / Kensington Olympia / Ealing Broadway / Richmond.

It has also been announced that on Sunday, August 5 there will be no overground services between Clapham Junction and Surrey Quays due to Network Rail track and infrastructure work.

Road users are also being reminded that gas company works in the Wandsworth one-way system will commence on Saturday morning and are likely to cause delays for the next six weeks.

Southern Gas Networks (SGN) will begin gas main replacement works in and around Armoury Way on Saturday.

Over the next six weeks there will be lane restrictions and closures in both Armoury Way and Wandsworth Plain. The works will also involve the closure of Frogmore at its junction with Armoury Way. A bus stop in Wandsworth Plain will also be suspended and passengers directed to use others nearby

The project has been approved by Transport for London which is the highway authority for the Wandsworth one-way system.

Until the project is completed approval has been given to SGN’s contractors for extended working hours between 7am and 7pm.

Also starting on Saturday morning, the neighbouring borough of Kensington and Chelsea will begin repairs to Albert Bridge. Vehicles will not be able to cross the bridge from 7am on Saturday until 7am on Monday.

Similar 48 hour closures will also be put in place at the bridge on the next two weekends - August 11 & 12 and August 18 & 19.

One footway will remain open for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists at all times but no vehicles will be permitted to cross it. Albert Bridge is not on any bus routes so no buses will be diverted, although delays in the area are likely. Vehicle traffic will be diverted via Chelsea and Battersea Bridges.
