Record number of street parties celebrate Royal wedding

Published: Thursday 17th May 18

Royal wedding fever is set to hit Wandsworth this weekend as residents stage a record number of street parties to celebrate the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Residents across Wandsworth are hosting 68 street parties to mark the occasion with flags, bunting, food and drink and music and laughter the order of the day.

The numbers have been boosted following the council’s decision to again waive all the normal costs and bureaucracy involved in organising this type of neighbourhood get-together.

The happy couple are tying the knot on Saturday. Six more Royal wedding themed street parties will be held on the bank holiday weekend making a grand total of 74.

When Prince William married Kate Middleton in 2011, and the fees were again waived, the borough hosted 70 street parties.

Organisers are being urged to do all they can to reduce the use of single-use plastics like straws, cups, glasses and cutlery in line with the council’s on-going campaign to reduce its own use of plastics. They are also being asked to make sure there are enough binliners to ensure everything can be cleared away once the party is over so that local streets are kept looking good.
