Chelsea Fringe: May 19-27, 2018

Join a walk through Nine Elms to find out how a public realm is being created

The alternative garden festival Chelsea Fringe, returns to Nine Elms, Battersea and Vauxhall again this month for a seventh year, and features a mixture of art, horticulture and community celebrations – many of them free..

The events will look to the past - reflecting the area’s strong heritage of gardens and horticulture - and to the future by shining the spotlight on the flourishing new communities and green spaces. New parks and open spaces are being created in Nine Elms, and the river is gradually being opened up to the public with the opening of new stretches of the Thames Riverwalk.

As part of the Chelsea Fringe, the Nine Elms on the South Bank team has specially commissioned the Patmore Sundial Gardens. Urban Canopy are creating a human-powered floral sundial on the Patmore Estate and a series of interlinked flowerbeds that reflect on the garden at different times of the day.

The Patmore Sundial Gardens

Residents and visitors to the estate are invited to stand at the centre of the sundial and follow the shadow cast by their body, and a trail of coloured plants, to the morning, afternoon or evening garden. Here they can collect plants to brew herbal teas connected to each interval – energising peppermint, fennel to aid digestion and camomile to aid restful sleep. Go along between May 19 and May 27.

Other Chelsea Fringe highlights across Vauxhall, Nine Elms & Battersea include:

· Workshops and classes including pop-up bouquet making, life drawing, hot composting and exotic planting and vegetable printmaking,

· Talks including visions for a greener future, the untold story of trees and a gardeners’ question time.

· The Doddington and Rollo Community Roof Garden family fun day

· A locals’ art hut hosted by Thrive in Battersea Park

· We Are All Wolves – a series of readings performed by local actors.
