Start your quitting journey on No Smoking Day

March 14 is No Smoking Day, and smokers are urged to use the free help available to quit for good.

Smoking is the single biggest cause of preventable death, but research shows you are up to four times more likely to quit successfully if you use a local stop smoking service. In the last three years the local service has helped more than 3000 people to stop smoking.

In Wandsworth free local support is available through the council’s Stop Smoking Service. Specialist advisors can give you products to use, such as patches and inhalators, and can offer you regular support and information, whether you smoke cigarettes, e-cigarettes or other tobacco products such as shisha.

Mark has been smoke-free for eight months thanks to the team’s help:  “Not smoking has made a big difference to my quality of life, not to mention the extra cash in my pocket. I truly couldn’t have done it without the support of the smoking cessation team, they were brilliant.

“I met with them weekly to review my progress and discuss how the range of nicotine replacement therapies were working to reduce my dependence.  The combination of this face to face support and the nicotine replacement therapies (patches and inhalers) really worked for me.” 

The council’s health spokesman Cllr Paul Ellis said: “Kicking an addiction to nicotine isn’t easy, but with the help of our stop smoking team it can be done. They have already helped hundreds of people quit and you could be next.”

Specialist advice is available in pharmacies and GP surgeries borough-wide, and there are drop-in clinics that anyone can visit without an appointment in the following locations:

  • Queen Mary’s Hospital Cardiology unit,  Roehampton Lane, Roehampton -  Tuesdays 10am-3pm
  • St George’s Hospital (Atkinson  Morley Wing) Blackshaw Road, Tooting - Wednesdays and Fridays 10am-3pm.

If you don’t have time to attend clinics or take part in a stop smoking course, you can get one-to-one support from a professionally trained advisor over the phone from a new pan-London service. Call Monday to Fridays from 9am to 8pm and on Saturday and Sunday between 11am and 4pm. There’s also an online portal where you can get information about other stop smoking services in your area.
