Get help to quit tobacco this Stoptober

Published: Friday 29th September 17

The 28-day Stoptober challenge starts on Sunday (October 1), and Wandsworth smokers are urged to take part and give up tobacco for good.

Now in its fifth year, Stoptober supports smokers across England to quit, with support and tips delivered straight to your inbox, via an app or on Facebook.

It’s based on research that shows if you can stop smoking for 28 days, you are five times more likely to stay smokefree for good. So far more than a million people have taken up the Stoptober challenge.

Wandsworth Council provides a free Stop Smoking service offering confidential face-to-face advice and support from specialist advisors, as well as free stop smoking materials and medication such as Nicotine Replacement Therapy.

The number of people in Wandsworth who smoke has dropped from a fifth of residents in 2011 to around 14.6 per cent now, but smoking is still the single biggest cause of preventable death. Two-thirds of smokers want to quit.

Wandsworth’s smokers can now also call a new telephone support service to get expert advice on how they can quit for good.

The new pan-London service will complement the existing service by offering a telephone service for residents who are unable to commit to the four- to eight-week, face-to-face council programme.

When Wandsworth smokers call the free number 0300 123 1044 to access the stop smoking information they will be offered a series of individual regular phone calls from a specialist advisor.

The council’s health spokesman Cllr Paul Ellis said: ”Giving up smoking is the single best thing you can do to improve your health, so we would urge smokers to sign up for Stoptober and take the 28 day pledge.

“We know giving up isn’t easy, but our stop smoking service can advise you on the right products to use and offer you regular support and information. For those not able to  commit to face-to-face help, the new telephone support line will help you quickly and easily get the support you need to quit.”
