Work up a sweat at new £900k fitness pavilion then take a cool dip at the lido

Published: Friday 7th July 17

The world famous Tooting Bec Lido doesn’t just offer London’s best place to cool off when the weather’s hot - it now boasts a new £900,000 fitness studio.

The lido’s new pavilion offers space for workout and exercise classes and community events, plus new toilets, changing rooms and a first aid room.

It has been paid for using funds provided by Wandsworth Council, the South London Swimming Club (SLSC) and Sport England, and was officially opened last week at a ceremony attended by Andrew Fitch – the great, great grandson of former Mayor of Wandsworth Alexander Glegg, who originally opened the Lido in 1906.

It offers a multi-purpose exercise room that will be used by the SLSC to enhance and increase participation in its annual programme of swimming and triathlon competitions and is also available to hire for other recreational activities. A new courtyard provides additional space for sunbathers.

The lido is one of London’s best loved open air pools and has been described as a “south London treasure”.

At a colossal 91 metres long it’s Europe’s second biggest outdoor freshwater swimming pool and boasts a separate pool for toddlers plus extensive space for sunbathing and picnics.

Over the past decade £1.5m has been spent by the council in improving the facilities and ensuring its long term future.

In recent years it has been named by Time Out magazine as the best in place in the capital for 'uninterrupted swimming' and as the 'Best Outdoor Swim in London' in The London Pools Campaign's Golden Goggles Award.

Leisure spokesman Cllr Jonathan Cook said: “The exciting addition of this pavilion is yet another reason to visit this wonderful south London gem.”

The lido is managed by Places for People (PfPL) on behalf of Wandsworth Council and is open to the general public from the spring bank holiday weekend until the end of September. Opening hours are 6am to 7.30pm until August 31 and 6am to 5pm from then until September 30. The pool remains open to members of the SLSC the whole year round.
