Could you be a Diabetes Champion?

Published: Monday 3rd July 17

Diabetes Champions raise awareness of the risk of diabetes in Wandsworth and help people make positive changes to their lifestyles to avoid developing the disease.

The council is helping the Wandsworth Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Diabetes UK recruit the next batch of champions, ready for training in September.

Each week 15 people in Wandsworth are told they have diabetes. There are already 11,700 local people living with Type 2 diabetes and another 23,000 are on the verge of getting it. Its impact and complications can be devastating, causing blindness, amputations, even early death.

The champions raise awareness of the signs, symptoms and risk factors of Type 2 diabetes and offer sources of information to help those who have been diagnosed stay healthy – including information about the council’s healthy living services such as the stop smoking service and health trainers.

All different types of people across all communities are suitable – you just need to be passionate about health and healthcare.

Successful applicants will be invited to attend a two day training course delivered by Diabetes UK in September. This will prepare you for the role and answer any questions you may have.
