Last chance to comment on Chestnut Avenue proposals

Published: Thursday 25th August 16

Local people have until September 4 to comment on proposals for managing an historic avenue of horse chestnut trees on Tooting Common.

The council has been consulting on the issue this summer, and commissioned an independent tree condition report to ensure the public has the full facts.

The report suggests three trees are now dead, 26 are recorded as in a “poor” state of health, 29 are “fair” and four are “good”. As a result, some trees will have to be removed and very significant pruning will be required to others to reduce the risk of further dangerous incidents.

The public is being asked to consider various options for managing the avenue, and now have just over a week left to give their opinion.

The views received will be taken into account when councillors make a final decision, along with the views of tree experts within the council’s parks service and the evidence compiled within the three independent tree surveys.
