Finalist announced for Active Wandsworth Awards

Some of the borough’s finest sportspeople, teams, volunteers, teachers and coaches are in the running for this year’s Active Wandsworth Awards.

Nominees are competing across 11 separate categories and the eventual winners will be revealed by Sky Sports News presenter David Garrido at the prize giving event on Thursday 11 February at the Wandsworth Civic Suite. 

Shortlisted: Spencer Hockey Club Girls U12's.

 

The awards are run by Enable Leisure & Culture which provides sports services on behalf of Wandsworth Council. The  competition is designed to recognise and celebrate the talent, dedication and commitment that fuels the borough’s sporting life.

Nominees for Community Sports Team of the year include Balham Blazer’s Under 17’s, Herne Hill Harriers Distance Team and Spencer Hockey Club Girls U12’s team. Balham had an amazing treble winning season including being winning the London Cup, Herne Hill enjoyed success at the National Cross Country Relays in November whilst Spencer were also crowned as National Champions in 2015.

Nominees for Schools Sports Team of the Year include Ernest Bevin’s successful Judo programme which has delivered medallists at regional and national competitions; Penwortham Primary School Football Team which had fantastic success across a number of borough tournaments as well as regional competitions; and Putney High Schools Rowing Team which clocked-up an impressive list of achievements which included regional and national successes.

Wandsworth Council’s sport and leisure spokesman, Cllr Jonathan Cook, said: “Sports bring people together, keeps us healthy and teach our young people valuable lessons about discipline, team work and rising to a challenge. These awards are about recognising local people who have made a special contribution to this important part of community life here in Wandsworth."


Paul McCue, Managing Director of Enable LC said “This is a great way to credit talented local sports people for their efforts.” 

First held in 1996, the annual event is a culmination of the sporting year for the Wandsworth community, which includes outstanding performances in many sporting arenas.
