Hundreds visit cancer pop-up shop

Published: Tuesday 26th January 16

More than 500 people have already visited the Wandsworth Get to Know Cancer pop up shop since it opened last Monday.

They have chatted with a nurse to get advice on spotting the signs of cancer and on how to change their lifestyle to help prevent it. Many have also had health checks to test their blood sugar, blood pressure and BMI, or to have worrying lumps or moles looked at.

More than 40 people have been subsequently referred to their GP or to a pharmacist for an NHS Health Check or a sexual health check-up, and over 40 more have been referred to support offered by Wandsworth Council, such as health trainer services, help losing weight and quitting smoking, or exercise taster sessions such as healthy walking groups.

Everyone is welcome to pop into the shop, which opens from 9am to 7pm, Mondays to Saturdays. Find it on Mitcham Road, opposite Pearl Chemist.

The shop is being run by the council’s public health team, with support from Pearl Chemist.

If a community group, charity, school or any other organisation would like a dedicated session with the nurses they can book one by calling Sheila Williams on 07904 104445.

The council’s health spokesman Cllr Jim Maddan said: “We want Wandsworth residents to feel confident to talk about cancer so they get help early and get treatment if they need it.

“It’s particularly encouraging that many of the people that have visited the shop so far have been men. We are targeting men this year as often they are reluctant to visit their GP”
