Cancer pop-up shop now open

Published: Wednesday 20th January 16

The Wandsworth Get to Know Cancer pop up shop was officially opened by the Mayor of Wandsworth, Cllr Nicola Nardelli, on Monday.

The mayor had a health check up and chatted to visitors, staff and volunteers at the Tooting shop, including people from the charity Generate who are participating in tailored sessions for people with learning disabilities.

Everyone is welcome to pop into the shop, which opens from 9am to 7pm, Mondays to Saturdays, starting on 18th January for three weeks. Find it on Mitcham Road, opposite Pearl Chemist.

The shop is being run by the council’s public health team, with support from Pearl Chemist. There is a programme of specialised advice – see the timetable below. General advice is also available during these times.

If a community group, charity, school or any other organisation would like a dedicated session with the nurses they can book one by calling Sheila Williams on 07904 104445.

This year the pop-up shop aims to tackle the 700 cancers in Wandsworth that could be prevented by lifestyle changes. Friendly nurses will be on hand to give advice and free health check-ups, including blood sugar, blood pressure and BMI monitoring, as well as to look at worrying lumps and moles.

People will also be encouraged to take advantage of the support offered by Wandsworth Council, such as getting support to achieve a health goal with our health trainer services, losing weight, quitting smoking, and exercise taster sessions such as healthy walking groups.

The council’s health spokesman Cllr Jim Maddan said: “The Get to Know Cancer pop-up shop has proved an excellent way of encouraging people to get their health checked and get advice on cancer, because it can be done far more quickly and informally than by visiting a GP.

“Every day around five people in Wandsworth find out they’ve got cancer – in a year that’s enough to fill 29 London buses. We know lots of residents think that getting cancer is down to fate, bad luck or chance, when in reality there’s a lot you can do to reduce your chance of getting it. We also know people often don’t talk about cancer even if they have concerns.

“We want Wandsworth residents to feel confident to talk about cancer so they get help early and get treatment if they need it.”

Mayank Patel, Pharmacist at Pearl Chemist Group, said, “We are really excited to be actively supporting the council with its first pop up shop in Tooting. The work of the shop complements the range of health services that pharmacies offer to their local community every day. Pearl Chemist Group is extremely honoured and proud of being able to be part of such a great initiative”.
