Published: Thursday 26th March 15

Local people are invited to get on their bikes this Easter holiday with a free cycling event in Wandsworth Park.

Activities will get underway from 11am on Wednesday 1 April including a chance to meet charity fundraiser SuperCyclingMan and join in a world record attempt for the most people simultaneously ringing bike bells.

Highlights will include:

  •    World record bike bell attempt (12pm)
  • Free Dr Bike maintenance checks to ensure your bike is in good working order
  • Free police security marking
  • Cycle skills activities
  • Five mile family bike ride led by trained instructors (12.15pm)

Bring your bike and join in the fun!

If you would like to join in the family bike ride, please visit the gazebo on the day and your name will be added to the list. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Visitors are being reminded that they will need to stick to the park’s dedicated cycle paths when riding through.

Cycles are only allowed on the path along the river -- there are signs clearly stating "no cycling" around the rest of the park. Allowing cycling, even at a one-off event, throughout the park sends the wrong message. I support exercise/healthy living schemes, but that doesn't mean cycling trumps all other uses, especially when a cycling event conflicts with the Council's own use policy in the park. With the addition of the Barclay Bikes around the park, the cycling on designated no-cycling paths in the park has gotten out of control. I have been knocked over by cyclists who don't give way on a path where they shouldn't be riding in the first place.

The cycle route in Wandsworth Park runs along the river front. The rest of the circulation path is intended for pedestrians. I hope that the proposed 5 mile ride will take people somewhere else not round and round the park?
