Get help to quit this Stoptober

Published: Friday 26th September 14

This week sees the start of Stoptober, with plenty of support on offer in the borough to help you stop smoking.

Stoptober is a national campaign that encourages people to give up smoking for 28 days. There is strong evidence that with professional help you are four times more likely to successfully quit smoking. Staying continuously quit for 28 days makes you more likely to stop for good.

Last year more than a quarter of a million people gave up smoking during Stoptober.

During the month, support to quit smoking will be available across the borough.  Specialist stop smoking advisors based within GP practices, pharmacies and drop-in clinics will provide free tailored and effective face-to-face support that has been proven to help people quit smoking.

The council’s public health team is leading on a five-year tobacco control plan, which provides support through its Stop Smoking Service, and takes enforcement action against counterfeit tobacco and the illegal sale of cigarettes to young people.

In addition, residents of the Winstanley, York Road, Patmore and Savonna Estates can get free gym or swimming membership if they take part in the Stop Smoking scheme.

Director of public health for Wandsworth, Houda Al-Sharifi, said: "Smoking is the single biggest cause of preventable deaths in Wandsworth so we will continue to make it one of our highest priorities to help people quit. A fifth of borough residents are smokers but we know that 70 per cent of them want to stop.

We would urge anyone who needs support to contact our service, their local GP or pharmacy. If a smoker takes the 28-day Stoptober Challenge there is a good chance this could help them quit for good.”

The drop-in clinics are at the following locations. No appointments needed, just turn up:

  • Cardiology Unit, Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton. Tuesdays, 10am to 3pm
  • Atkinson Morley Wing, St George’s Hospital, Tooting. Wednesdays and Fridays, 10am-3pm.

Or you can also access support at your GP or local pharmacy.

The Wandsworth Stop Smoking Service provides a free 24 hour helpline.
