Hundreds of photos bring #MyWandworth to life

The Mayor of Wandsworth’s Instagram photo sharing competition has generated 575 individual pictures of life in the brighter borough from an army of local amateur photographers.
The #MyWandsworth Exhibition comes to Southside Shopping Centre
The competition, called What Wandsworth Means to Me, challenged residents to capture images on any subject they felt illustrated day-to-day life.
All of the entries were uploaded via photo sharing app Instagram under the event hashtag #MyWandsworth. The whole collection can be viewed online and has been shared with thousands of people across Twitter, Facebook and other social media tools.
Mayor Angela Graham said the vast collection has provided some vivid insights into daily life in Wandsworth:
She said: “This competition is all about celebrating community life in our borough while encouraging local people to explore digital photography and photo sharing.
“The sheer range and diversity of the entries is truly incredible and it’s fascinating to see the different ways people interpreted the challenge. The photo quality was extremely high across the board and it is wonderful so many people went out to capture a shot of the borough which means something to them.
“Thank you to everyone who took part and to our generous sponsors HSBC and Snappy Snaps Wandsworth.”
As part of the competition the Mayor and independent community group Instagramers London led a ‘photo-walk’ where local people were inspired to capture images along the way.
The best 40 entries were chosen to go on public display at Southside Shopping Centre earlier this month and a judging panel including Cllr Graham, HSBC Clapham Junction Branch Manager Alistair Ramsay, along with members of the Putney Photographic Society, had the unenviable task of picking the winner.
Cllr Graham continues: “It was an incredibly difficult decision but ultimately we gave first place to local resident Rachel Nixon for her colourful image taken inside a Tooting sari shop. We felt it really captured the spirit of the competition and created a wonderfully vivid reflection of Tooting’s diversity, vibrancy and culture.”

Rachael’s prize was a brand new iPad provided by HSBC, Clapham Junction.
Snappy Snaps Wandsworth provided mounted copies of the top 40 entries for the public exhibition which were then sold to the public and the proceeds donated to the mayor’s youth charity.
