Dragon helps young entrepreneurs

Published: Thursday 30th May 13

Young entrepreneurs can get help kick-starting their own businesses thanks to a unique link-up between the council and the government-backed Start Up Loans scheme.

James CaanWandsworth is the first council to work with the £117m scheme, headed by James Caan from TV's Dragons Den.

Start Up Loans provides financial backing and mentoring support to young people aged between 18 and 30 who have a strong business idea.

The scheme has already handed out thousands of low-cost, unsecured loans averaging around £4,500 to young business people all over the country.

It aims to help set up 25,000 businesses nationwide by 2015, with a target of 20 new businesses in Wandsworth this year.

Leader of the council Ravi Govindia said:

"We're delighted to be working with Start-Up Loans on this project. We want to unlock the business potential in our young people and help them reach their full potential.

"In the current economic climate getting start-up funding can be very difficult, so this scheme will help young people with some excellent and innovative ideas take the first step towards success."
