Voter registration forms are being sent to all borough households this month. You will need to make sure you fill it in and send it back in order to be eligible to vote.

Polling station signBy law, everyone must complete a voter registration form each year, even if they don't intend to vote. Failure to do so could lead to a find of up to £5,000.  A revised electoral register will be published in December this year.

Council and European Parliamentary elections will be held in 2014, but a by-election or referendum can take place at any time and you can vote only if your name appears on the voters' list.

If your household details have not changed, you can let us know by using the freephone, online or text (SMS) secure confirmation facility. You will need your form in front of you to use any of these services. If your details have changed please complete and return the form straight away. Don't forget to sign it.

Registering promptly also avoids the need for electoral registration staff to call at people's homes to chase up missing details. Avoiding these unnecessary visits will save council tax payers' money.

Every British, Commonwealth or Republic of Ireland citizen living in the UK is eligible to vote in this country's elections. All other European Union citizens are eligible to vote in European Parliamentary elections and local elections held here.

Registering to vote does not mean you are automatically put on the council tax list.

If your form does not arrive, you can download a copy.

BE AWARE that if you use the 'confirm your details by text message' option on the form then your details will be sold on by the council! Remember to tick the box to be removed from the edited list or you'll be receiving post about double glazing and solar panels for ever more..

If your details have not changed and you choose to re-register using the SMS secure facility you will not have an option to ‘opt out’ of appearing on the edited register which by law can be sold to anyone. This is stated on the voter registration form and on the Electoral Services 2012 Annual Canvass webpage. If your details have not changed and you use the secure Freephone or Internet re-registration facilities you do have the facility to opt out. If you are concerned that you may have used the Text facility when you had intended to ‘opt out’ of the edited register you can still complete and return the voter registration form which will overoverride any previous return by Text. Contact Electoral Services on 020 8871 6023 for further help.
