Avoid traffic gridlock in town centre

Release date: Friday 3rd February 12

Comment on this article

Motorists planning to travel through Wandsworth town centre during this evening’s rush hour (Friday) are being advised to find an alternative route because of traffic gridlock caused by a burst water main.

The water main has sprung a major leak at the junction of Garratt Lane and Wandsworth High Street, where traffic restrictions are already in place due to major ongoing gas replacement works.

Transport for London and Wandsworth Council are urgently working on setting up a diversionary route, but traffic delays throughout the area are expected to last well into the evening.

Re the severe congestion towards Wandsworth high street. Travelled before 9am yesterday and what an absolute disgrace of a set up. Temp traffic lights are needed from the 1 way system as you have 3 lanes of traffic all pushing to get into 1 lane! Where there is closure at end of high street People r doing u turns to get in the direction they need. It took me over an hour to get from Putney to Wandsworth with traffic at a standstill for most of it. NO diversion in Place either. Bad bad arrangement there so something needs to be done and soon before there is a major incident (if there hasn't been 1 already)! NO Safety thought about here!!

This the worst gridlock I've seen in the 10 years I've lived here. It took me an hour to drive from the roundabout to Armoury Way and this was gone midnight on Friday. That journey usually takes 2 minutes. Furthermore I've not seen anyone working on the problem for the entire weekend. THIS IS A DISGRACE.

Please Avoid it. I am a Bus Driver in that area, and it is becoming mentally stressful and beginning to make me quite ill!!

The fact that this traffic news hasn't been updated since Friday shows the complete lack of care Wandsworth BC have shown towards this incident. I totally agree with the comments above and can we have a response back please and a plan of action with timetables. What service are Wandsworth providing here exactly??
