Tooting’s new pop-up arts centre, Construction Gallery, has officially opened.

The gallery will be at 74-80 Upper Tooting Road for three months, and will showcase locally-based talent across the fields of visual art, live art, music and literature, including ambitious large-scale sculpture.

The project has been made possible thanks to the recent grant from the Mayor of London's Outer London Fund.

The council's economic development office applied for the grant to build on its Tooting Together initiative and it will be spent on helping to make Tooting a hub for arts, crafts and locally-produced goods.

Around 350 people went along to the gallery's launch, including Mayor of Wandsworth  Cllr Jane Cooper, The Mayor of London's Advisor for Culture and Youth Munira Mirza and local MP Sadiq Khan. They viewed Alistair McClymont's installation After the Rain, which uses infra-red heaters, dripping water and tarmac to create the illusion of rain on a hot summer's day.

Construction Gallery will also feature work by local artists in residence during its three-month stay, and includes exhibitions and events, a shop, free wi-fi work desks and a café.

Construction Gallery is directed by POST Artists network and is open Wednesday to Sunday from 12noon to 7pm until March 25.
