Lido open this weekend
Published: Thursday 29th September 11
Tooting Bec Lido will stay open for an extra couple of days to enable swimmers to make the most of the good weather forecast for this weekend.
Usually the Lido shuts down on September 30, with only members of the South London Swimming Club able to use it over the winter months.
However the water in the Lido is currently a balmy 16 degrees celsius, and the council's leisure contractor DC Leisure has decided to let swimmers enjoy a final outdoor summer dip.
It will be open from 6am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. The paddling pool is also open from 10am until 5pm.
Tooting Bec Lido is the largest fresh water, open air swimming pool in England and is also one of the country's oldest - first opening in 1906. Over the past decade nearly £1.5m has been spent by the council in improving the facilities and ensuring the pool's long term future.
In recent years it has been named by Time Out magazine as the best in place in the capital for 'uninterrupted swimming' and as the 'Best Outdoor Swim in London' in The London Pools Campaign's Golden Goggles Award.
