Green theatre tours local schools
Published: Monday 18th April 11
A high energy theatre production has completed a tour of ten local primary schools to help teach youngsters about climate change, air pollution and how our travel choices can affect the environment.
The interactive production - called Go! Go! Go! - is produced and performed by the Big Wheel Theatre Company. The group has worked closely with the council's environment team to ensure each performance proves practical examples of how pupils can improve their local environment.
The initiative aims to raise awareness of green issues, encourage sustainable travel like walking and cycling and cut rush hour traffic congestion caused by 'school runs'.
The ten schools to receive a visit were Highview, Beatrix Potter, St Boniface, Holy Ghost, Ronald Ross, Franciscan, Albemarle, Hotham, West Hill and Hillbrook.
Wandsworth Council's environment spokesman Cllr Sarah McDermott attended the Hillbrook performance to see the drama first hand.
She said: "This is a fantastic and fun way to get these important messages across. The children clearly loved every minute of it and went away thinking hard about how they can do their bit tackle climate change and pollution.
"The initiative is an important part of our efforts to cut traffic congestion around local schools and improve air quality in Wandsworth."
The tour was organised by the council's environmental initiatives team with funding from Transport for London.
