Beacon status for Wandsworth tennis

Published: Tuesday 28th September 10

Wandsworth Common Tennis has been awarded beacon status for its high quality, affordable community tennis programmes.

It was one of 60 tennis sites across of the country to be awarded the honour by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and the Tennis Foundation.

To become a beacon site, facilities must offer some access to free tennis plus quality, affordable coaching and regular competitions for all ages and abilities.

Roy Staniland, LTA Surrey County Secretary, said:

"To get more people playing, we need more quality tennis facilities like this, offering the local community a fun, affordable tennis experience all year round, outside the traditional framework of a members club."

Cabinet Member for Environment and Culture Sarah McDermott said:

"Wandsworth Council is delighted that All Star Coaching, which manages the six tennis courts at Wandsworth Common on behalf of the council, has achieved beacon status for the site.

"The borough has recently adopted a Tennis Strategy for the next five years and this achievement lays down a gauntlet for the rest of the borough's tennis facilities to work towards similar aims and ambitions."
