Clapham Junction campaign launched
Today (Friday) marks the official launch of the council’s new campaign to improve Clapham Junction Station and create better connections to the rest of London.
A new ten point action plan sets out the council’s key priorities for the Battersea interchange, including a link to the underground network and a direct service to Heathrow.
The ‘Connecting Clapham Junction’ document also lays down objectives for bringing the decaying building up to standard and for increasing the frequency of existing services.
Council officials are meeting with Network Rail next week to discuss plans for the station.
Clapham Junction, Battersea is the busiest station in the country with more than 1,700 trains and 40,000 passengers passing through everyday.
Council transportation spokesman Guy Senior said:
“We’re determined to unlock the full potential of this key interchange. With relatively little investment the station could offer higher frequency commuter services and more direct connections to other parts of the capital.
“Other simple changes would allow more long distance commuters to switch with local services at Clapham Junction instead of Victoria and Waterloo. This would mean thousands of passengers avoid central London altogether, cutting congestion on inner city services.
“Our new campaign will step up the pressure on the Government and the rail industry to prioritise this long overdue investment.”
The council’s ten point plan for Clapham Junction is:
1. Complete the East London Line extension to Clapham Junction
2. Connect Clapham Junction to the Underground
3. Create new station entrance on St. John's Hill
4. Improve the station environment
5. Provide new rail services to Heathrow and Gatwick
6. Improve routes between the town centre and the station
7. Improve interchange between rail, buses, taxis and bikes
8. Increase the capacity of the station
9. Improve train frequencies
10. Improve information and ticketing services
Copies of the lobbying booklet have now been delivered to thousands of homes and businesses in the local area.
Residents can signal their support for the campaign and vote for their top three priorities for the station through the online poll on the council's website.

this is much needed for the local infrastructure and long overdew. Hopefully scheduled works can be agred swiftly and we can have a train station and enviroment to be proud of.
David Cantell - Battersea
Both Clapham Junction station and the surrounding area are a disgrace & embarrassment. It is good that something is happening after many years without investment or improvement. However the measures are piecemeal, do not go nearly far enough and do not show if or when we will get a station fit for purpose. I would like to see a complete structured plan of improvements that will deliver us a new station in an appropriate setting. And this does not include inappropriate tower blocks as previously put forward. This is not about making money on the side but proper investment in the station and surrounding area. This has already been paid for by commuters through their tickets.
Ian Wyatt - Clapham Junction
