Safer stations pledge reaffirmed

Photo to accompany this press release  The council, police, train operators and transport organisations have all reaffirmed their commitment to providing safer stations in Wandsworth.

The Wandsworth Safer Stations pledge demonstrates that all these organisations will work together to make rail travel safer for passengers in the borough.

It means that all 16 stations in Wandsworth are regularly audited to make sure they are providing passengers and the staff who work there with the safest possible environment.

And because all the organisations have signed up to the pledge on a corporate basis, it means that once improvements have been identified, they can be implemented more rapidly without getting bogged down in bureaucratic red tape.

Improvements carried out so far under the initiative include more CCTV cameras, better lighting, better signage in and around stations, the removal of vegetation and the removal of graffiti.

The council's community safety spokesman Cllr James Cousins said: "Providing a safe and secure environment at rail stations is vital if we want to encourage people to get out of their cars and onto public transport.

"Providing better lighting and improved CCTV coverage are just two of the measures that can be deployed to increase personal safety levels and offer greater reassurance to passengers.

"There has been a Safer Stations initiative operating in Wandsworth since 1993 and there has been a lot of great work done since then. However, all the signatories are agreed that they need to keep on looking for ways of making our local stations safer and more secure and I am delighted that all these organisations have reaffirmed their commitment to continue working together to provide a safer environment for passengers."

The organisations that have backed the Wandsworth Safer Station initiative include the council, the Metropolitan Police; British Transport Police, Network Rail, Transport for London, SouthWest Trains, Southern Trains and First Capital Connect.

Their pledge reads: "We the undersigned undertake on behalf of our organisations to work in partnership to improve the safety, accessibility and environmental quality of railway stations in the borough of Wandsworth, thereby securing a better travelling future for all residents, passengers and our staff."
