New-look library launched

Photo to accompany this press release  Tooting Library was officially reopened last week (Wednesday 10 March) by shadow culture minister Ed Vaizey.

The new-look library has benefited from a £3million redevelopment to make better use of its space and provide a more comfortable and modern environment.

The refurbishment has seen the introduction of new heating and lighting, better public toilet facilities and a lift to all floors.

A public access computer room has also been created and the library now makes full use of self-service terminals where customers can issue and return books independently and manage their own accounts.

The modernisation proposals were drawn up following consultation with local people and were jointly funded by Wandsworth Council and the Big Lottery Fund.

The library, which reopened its door to the public on Monday 22 February, attracted more than 14,000 visitors in a fortnight.

Environment and leisure spokesman Sarah McDermott said: "We’re delighted to officially reopen this fantastic building and welcome local residents back through the doors.

“Inside, people will find a brighter, more inviting space with a wealth of modern, new facilities. Outside, we have carefully preserved and restored the building’s exterior which is such a prominent and well-loved landmark.

“So far, the feedback we've received from the public has been terrific – especially from local families who are delighted with the new children’s section.”

Sue Charteris, member of the Big Lottery Fund’s England Committee, said: “Libraries sit at the heart of our communities so are ideally placed to become wider centres of community learning. The Big Lottery Fund has invested £15.3m to improve libraries in London, enabling them to host a range of activities beyond their traditional role.

“It’s fantastic to see the new and improved library in Tooting and it is already becoming a hub for community activities in the area.”
