Green winners announced
A gala awards ceremony took place earlier this month to honour the borough’s greenest businesses and residents for their environmental achievements.
The Wandsworth Green & Heartbeat Awards were hosted by TV chef Oliver Rowe at the Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel in Battersea.
More than 400 guests attended the event to find out the winners of three council run competitions.
The ‘Green Business Awards’ were open to every business in the borough and the individuals who work within them.
Devereaux Architects scooped the coveted title of Overall Green Business Champion in recognition of their well-developed environmental awareness campaign. The company has also produced a sustainability guide to encourage a green approach to new projects.
The evening also marked the conclusion of the ‘Green Champions Awards’ which recognise individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to the environment. The scheme also acknowledges local schools and other groups working to make the borough a greener place.
Lucy Neal was announced the overall winner for helping establish the Transition Town Tooting movement and for working tirelessly to promote environmental projects including ‘foodivals', talks and film events, plus the upcoming Trashcatchers Carnival in July.
Lucy will now go on to compete against six other Green Champions from neighbouring boroughs in the Green Guardian Awards on February 26.
The night also revealed the winners of the council’s ‘Heartbeat Awards’ which celebrate local businesses committed to offering healthier food to their customers.
The Heartbeat Gold Awards went to Tompkins PLC and HMP Wandsworth which have made great strides in improving the quality and nutritional value of their food.
The overall Heartbeat Champion Trophy was claimed by the LTA National Tennis Centre which puts healthy eating at the centre of its approach to developing the tennis stars of tomorrow.
Wandsworth’s executive member for leisure and the environment Cllr Sarah McDermott said the winners were an “inspiration”:
“It was real honour to introduce these awards. The night brought together some truly inspiring people from right across the community and revealed the extraordinary range of actions being taken to make Wandsworth a greener and healthier place.
“There was a real buzz and sharing of ideas and all of the competitors made a great contribution. My congratulations to all involved.”
The awards were part financed by the European Regional Development Fund and sponsored by Go Green Plus, Liberata, the Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce and the Wandsworth Guardian.
