Join the Big Dance

The council is calling on local groups and organisations to get involved with this year’s Big Dance, July 3 - 11.

The nine-day festival involves a programme of dance events held in unusual places all over London. It could be a taster session in a community centre, a ‘dance-athon’ in a local park, or a stage show in a local street or shopping centre.

The aim is to get as many people as possible up on their feet to celebrate every style of dance the borough has to offer - from samba and ballroom, to disco and lindy hop.

Local groups that would like to set up an event should contact the council’s arts team to find out how to register. Email arts@wandsworth.gov.uk or call 020 8871 8711.

The Big Dance is also offering a limited number of micro grants to help support some of the capital’s most imaginative projects. Grants of £1,000 are available and the deadline for applications is February 15.

Wandsworth’s sports and leisure spokesman Sarah McDermott said:

“This is a terrific event which gets the whole community out to celebrate and enjoy themselves. Every possible taste is catered for and everyone is welcome.

“Dancing is also a fantastic way of staying fit and healthy and we hope the event will inspire more of us to join a dance class or get involved with a local group.”
