Local youngsters tree planting
Last week pupils from Dolphin School in Battersea enjoyed a day out of the classroom planting new trees on Wandsworth Common.
The school was recently given 25 native trees, including Thorns and Hazels, by the Woodland Trust as part of their Trees for All initiative.
Because of a lack of space on their site the school approached Wandsworth Council to help them find a suitable place where the saplings could grow.
An area by the railway line on Wandsworth Common was identified where the children would be able to visit the trees and check on their progress.
Now the saplings are planted the youngsters will be making regular reports on their health and condition to the council's tree section.
Wandsworth's environmental spokesman Sarah McDermott visited the Common to praise the youngsters' work.
She said: "The children really threw themselves into the task and were genuinely excited to be making a positive difference to their environment.
"They've made a valuable contribution to the Common and will enjoy watching the saplings mature over the coming years.
"It's a terrific way for children to get involved with the borough's environment."
Dolphin School principal Mrs Jo Glen said:
"As part of our revised Life Education Programme, we have a new emphasis on education for sustainable development, and are keen to take every opportunity to increase the children’s awareness and enjoyment of the natural environment, and to grow their sense of responsibility towards the local and global community."
