Balham hotel plan approved

The council’s planning applications committee has approved plans for a new 90-room hotel in Balham town centre.

The site at 177 Balham High Road is currently occupied by a disused office building.

Planning applications chairman Leslie McDonnell said:

“This scheme would bring a derelict property back into public use and help meet growing demand for hotel accommodation in our town centres. More visitors will be good news for local shops and businesses.”

The plan involves adding two additional storeys to the existing building and constructing a part four and part six storey rear extension.

The design has several environmentally friendly features including a green roof and solar panels.

Despite the recession Balham has continued to attract a steady stream of new investment and the number of empty shops is well below the UK average.

I think investment in the area and a new hotel are a fantastic development for Balham. Of course the NIMBY's are going to be upset (I don't particularly blame them), but come on everyone - this is good news for Balham!

Why were local residents not consulted? I assume that the council will not allocate any parking spaces to the hotel for either hotel staff or guests use. This wiould be in line with other developments near transport links.
When will residents get an opportunity to view the plans and provide feedback? There are outstanding questions to be answered:
- How much disruption will be caused whilst the existing building is extended?
- What is the timeframe for this work?
- How will deliveries be made to the hotel if the existing parking area will be used for an extension?

Consultation with local residents would be nice before approval of any planning developments. I live on Oakmead Road next to this site and this is the first I have heard of a 90-room hotel on my doorstep! One obvious question is where are all the hotel guests going to park, given that Oakmead residents already struggle to find any spare spaces as it is?

Would be good to ask residents what they think about having a 90-room hotel in their street.
