Student safety
Students are amongst the most likely to become victims of crime and are often seen as easy targets for criminals.
The following tips will lessen the likelihood of you becoming a victim of crime:
- Always lock your bedroom door even if you are just going down the corridor.
- Get a map of the campus and learn a safe way around.
- In halls of residence, be aware of who follows you into the building and challenge any strangers.
- Limit how much you carry a laptop around with you - only have it on your person when you need to.
- All your valuable property (including your bike) should be marked and registered at www.immobilise.com. Consider also marking items with your student ID number. This will help the police to return recovered items to you.
- Organise contents insurance.
- When out at night, walk with friends and travel by licensed taxis. Consider staying over with friends instead of travelling on alone.
- Be careful when using cash machines, particularly at night.
- Make sure you read the other advice in this section, especially when out and about, travel and transport safety and mobile phone security.
