Crime statistics
There is often a variance in the crime figures from what was estimated to be the number of crimes to what the actual numbers were. There are a number of reasons why things like burglary, motor vehicle crime and street robbery fluctuate so much. With burglary, there are often specialist police operations targeting known offenders or hotspots in the borough. Surprisingly enough, the weather can also play a part in why the numbers may drop: it appears burglars don't like getting wet! Because of this we do not produce action plans but respond to hotspots with targeted campaigns.
The Council's Wandsafe Burglary Aftercare Officer or Police Safer Neighbourhood Teams may have done a number of visits in an area following a recent burglary, which may have put local residents on alert. Increase may be due to the weather again with people forgetting to close windows and doors in hot weather. If an area is regarded as a soft target through poor security the burglars will often return time and time again.
Our Community Safety team and the Police often run awareness campaigns on various crime types such as burglary, street crime and robbery. They encourage you to take better care of your possessions, improve your physical security and encourage you to report crime event though you may think that nothing can be done about it.

Wandsworth is the safest borough in inner London for recorded crime. According to government figures, Wandsworth has less recorded crime than places like Oxford or North Lincolnshire as is well outside the top 40 high crime areas.
